Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave Therapy is used for treatment of chronic soft tissue conditions of the feet including Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendinopathy and Shin Splints. It is used widely by physiotherapists, osteopaths and podiatrists, and is endorsed by Sports Medicine Australia.
During Shockwave Therapy high energy soundwaves are transmitted to the area of injury. This is believed to induce increased blood flow and metabolic activity around the site of pain accelerating the healing process.
During treatment you will receive 2000 pulses which takes approximately 4 minutes. Many patients experience pain relief immediately after the first treatment. Depending on the severity of your injury and your response to the therapy you may require up to 5 sessions however 3 is often sufficient.
After the treatment you may feel some soreness to the area which is normal and to be expected. Icing or simple analgesia may be required to control the pain. There may be minor bruising to the area. You should rest from high impact activities for 2-3 days after the treatment.
Between 60-70% of people with Plantar Fasciitis will show marked improvement in pain and function. Shockwave Therapy is used in conjunction with conservative treatment options. If you have any questions please feel free to make a time to discuss with one of our Podiatrists.
